Roof racks aren’t just for looks. If you’ve ever tried packing up for a camping trip or had to move something long and awkward, you already know why they come in handy. Throwing everything in the truck bed doesn’t always cut it. Sometimes you just need more space.

There’s no perfect rack for every truck. What works for one person might not work for someone else. It depends on how you use your truck, what you carry, and how often you need the extra room. That’s the part most people overlook.

Not All Roof Racks Are the Same

Some racks sit on top of the cab. Others go over the bed or mount onto a cap. Each one has its own purpose.

Cab Racks

These are the smaller ones that attach right to the cab roof. They’re usually for lighter stuff. Think snowboards, fishing gear, things like that. Easy to add, and they don’t get in the way much.

Bed Racks

These stand above the truck bed. They’re bigger and tougher. Good choice for folks hauling ladders, lumber, or any long gear. A lot of work trucks use this setup. Also popular for overlanding builds where the bed still needs to be used for other stuff.

Cap Racks

If your truck has a cap, you can use that roof space too. People who carry larger gear or want to mount a rooftop tent often go this route. It keeps everything up high and out of the way.

A Few Things to Consider

When you’re choosing a rack, there are a few details worth thinking through. Nothing complicated, just stuff that will save you time and money.

What are you planning to carry?

Not all gear weighs the same. Kayaks? Pretty light. Rooftop tents? Not so much. Make sure the rack can handle the load. Some lighter-duty racks won’t hold up under real weight.

Will it fit your truck?

Obvious, but easy to miss. Some racks are universal, some are not. Always check compatibility with your specific make and model. If you’ve got a cap or other gear already installed, double-check spacing and mounting options.

What else is already on your truck?

If you’ve got tonneau covers, lights, or anything mounted near the cab or bed rails, make sure your new rack won’t get in the way. Some setups don’t play well together.

Planning on highway driving?

If you do a lot of longer drives, look for a rack that sits low and doesn’t add much wind resistance. A slim profile cuts down on noise and keeps fuel use in check.

Will you need to remove it?

Some racks are easy to pop off when not in use. Others stay put. Think about how often you’ll use it and how much flexibility you want.

Overlanding? You'll Want Something Stronger

If your idea of a weekend is getting far away from pavement, then your rack needs to do more than just hold a few duffel bags.

Look for platform-style racks with lots of mounting points. You’ll need space for fuel cans, recovery gear, and maybe even solar panels. Weight capacity matters, especially if you’re adding a rooftop tent.

Cap-mounted systems like a Thule rack on a LEER cap are a smart choice here. They keep your gear locked in and secure while leaving the bed free for larger items.

We’ve been around long enough to see which racks actually hold up and which ones are mostly hype. These are the ones we recommend:

  • Thule for clean design and a wide range of accessories
  • Yakima if you’re carrying outdoor gear or sports equipment
  • Rhino-Rack for heavier jobs or off-road use
  • LEER racks if you’ve got one of their caps and want something that fits like it belongs there

All of these are built to handle tough Canadian weather and real use, not just weekend trips.

Don’t Skip the Install

A solid rack can’t do much if it’s installed wrong. You don’t want rattles, leaks, or worse, a loose rack on the highway. We always recommend having it installed properly, especially if it’s going to carry anything heavy.

At Overland Truck Outfitters, we’ve installed roof racks on just about every truck you can think of. We make sure the weight is balanced, everything is tightened down, and there’s no guesswork involved. If you’re set on installing it yourself, we’ll still make sure you get the right brackets and walk you through what matters.
